Ocean Blue Reef
A mooring service to preserve marine biodiversity
Salvador Moron
Ocean Blue Reef is a system of smart buoys connected to an application so that mooring areas are delimited and more easily managed by the authorities and boaters are autonomous in booking.
An initiative to preserve Posidonia sea grass
Posidonia is a plant that resembles a sea grass and has the virtues of keeping sediments immobile thanks to its roots, producing oxygen that supports the life of many species (it is estimated that more than 400 species of plants and more than 1,000 species of animals thrive in Posidonia meadows) and a filtering action that helps to keep the sea water clean and transparent. However, in some places, 40% of these meadows have disappeared in recent years and the culprit is obvious: the anchors and chains of boats that tear up the beds. With the growth of pleasure boating, the problem is getting worse.
The boating population is difficult to control, as are the numerous anchorages along the coast. Ocean Blue Reef wants to create a system of intelligent buoys that boaters can reserve from their phones or tablets and that will allow authorities to manage mooring parks, thus preserving the Posidonia meadows. The newly created company has created a first prototype and is looking for technological and financial partners.
